Business Cards / The Aristocrat

A business card is placed on the silver tray of a French manservant, sending him scurrying forth to deliver it to his lord. His mission is of the utmost social importance. If he fails, there will indeed be dire consequences…

We find ourselves in the French countryside of the 17^th century- rolling hills of vibrant green, dotted with villages, farms and vineyards. Occasionally, one sees the grand visage of a castle rising from the land, its stone face a symbol of the power and prestige of the aristocracy.

A horse-drawn carriage pulls up to one of these castles and out of the carriage springs a lively footman, who presents a billet de visite- or visiting card- to the servants of the castle household. The servants mutter and nod as they accept the card. They give the footman a final sniff of approval before disappearing into the castle.

You are witnessing the first western business card in action. Often meant to signal the impending arrival of a French aristocrat, these cards sported intricate engravings and were each embossed with a coat of arms. They were, in essence, certificates of authenticity.

Several days after our friendly manservant presents the card to his benevolent lord, a string of carriages arrive at the castle. A gaggle of lords and ladies pours fourth from the carriages, puffed up and haughty. Straightening their dinner attire, they enter the castle to bowing servants and bellowed greetings. Each one of them produces his or her own personal billet de visite and places it on the silver card tray.

You see, any self-respecting socialite of the seventeenth century kept such cards, lest they become a social pariah. Their cards, just as their castles, represented their standing. Much like how the business cards of today can accentuate and elevate the character and position of a business.
